Athletes to Watch: Cross Country

What do you do to prepare right before a meet?

Before meets I usually try to stretch and warm up for about 20 minutes. I have to make sure to hydrate all day.

How do you stay in shape for cross country?

I attend practice every day for cross country, and I also have soccer practice every day, too. Even though I can only attend cross-country practice about once a week, I still stay in shape by playing soccer.

What got you interested in this sport?

There is only one event and it is the 5K. This is 3.1 miles. I did track, so I was already interested in running and I knew it would help me with my soccer. Also, my teammate and the captain of cross country, Katherine MacNeal, inspired me to do it.

Why do you enjoy this sport?

I enjoy it because everyone on the team is so close and we are like a family. Also, by running a lot, it helps me with my soccer.

Where do you see yourself in the future with cross country?

Cross country has been a great experience for me, and my hope is to become a great runner. Since this is my first year of cross country, I haven’t really thought about how my future would be. I have always thought about running in college, and I feel like I will. But first I need to get better.

How do you stay in shape during off-season?

During the off-season, I actually rest because to be honest, running is exhausting. And since it is one month after cross country, I use it to keep in shape. I would go and run a couple of miles just to keep my endurance up and a couple of sprints just to prepare for track and keep my strength up.

Who inspired you to start running?

Running has always just been a fun exercise for me since I was a kid, but it wasn’t until I got to middle school that I became more involved. I was on the team at Tequesta. I joined track, and eventually that lead to me joining cross country. So everything just sort of happened the moment I decided to try out for track in middle school.

How else do you physically train other than running?

If I’m lucky, once or twice a week I could go to the gym and work on other parts of my body. But cross country usually wears me out, so I have no energy to do anything else. Running has just always been a useful way to train physically.

What are some of your pregame rituals?

I listen to upbeat music to get excited and in the zone before games.

Who is your role model?

Misty May Treanor because she is such an amazing player. And I aspire to be as good as her someday.

Why did you choose to play volleyball?

I decided to play volleyball because my sister had played and it seemed like a really exciting sport.

Does the team have any unique bonding methods?

On weekends, the team has pool parties or movie nights in order to bond. Bonding helps the team communicate better in games.

How has volleyball affected your life?

Volleyball has made me a better-rounded person. Even though it takes up a lot of my free time, it’s worth every second because I absolutely love when playing and I have made so many incredible friends.

What are your pre-game rituals?

Before I play, I have to listen to my iPod to get pumped and ready to play.

What position do you enjoy to play most and why?

Right now I’m an outside hitter, but I was a setter for two years. I love playing outside because of the thrill I get when I get a good kill. But setting is also really fun.  I don’t really have a favorite position. As long as I am on the court, I’m happy.

Do you plan to play competitively in college?

Yes, I am interested in continuing after high school. I will play wherever I end up going to school.

What do you enjoy most about the game?

My favorite part of the game is getting an ace. It feels great to know you hit a shot they couldn’t return.

How has volleyball had a positive impact on your life?

Volleyball has positively impacted my life because it has taught me time management and many other life lessons. I have made so many great friends through playing. To me, it’s more than a sport. It’s my life.

How to you balance school with also being on the team?

Balancing school and being on a team is extremely difficult. Both school and volleyball require commitments, but my parents have always told me that school comes first.  I rarely miss a practice even if it means staying up really late to finish homework. It’s part of being a student athlete. I love to play so I make sure to manage my time well even if it means studying extra on the weekend so I have time to play volleyball during the week.

What would you tell someone who is looking to get into volleyball?

All I would say is that it takes time to learn but anyone can learn to play.  If you are interested in playing for fun, there are many recreational leagues around along with many club/travel teams if you want to play at a high level.

Senior Sherrell Buckley

How did you get in to golf?

My dad used to play golf and I used to go on the course just to watch him and then one day he bought me a pair of clubs and told me to start playing.

What attracts you to the sport?

The sport really is a mental game and you have to push yourself to be better, so I kind of like that aspect of it.

How do you prepare during the off-season?

During the off season I like to practice at least 3 hours a day, whether it’s playing or just chipping and putting.

What do you do off the course to help your game?

Golf is really a mental game so if you kind of visualize yourself playing and visualize yourself scoring well, it kind of helps you. You have to build up your confidence to play golf.

How do you prepare yourself on the day of the match?

I try to always be mentally prepared to play but on the day of a match I try to keep to myself during school. Listening to music really helps me get focused.

What is your biggest accomplishment in the sport?

I would say shooting my lowest score which was a 75, but that was during the off-season. During the season I would say going to states last year was my biggest accomplishment.

What are your goals for the future?

I hope that our team will beat St. Thomas and we will place first at districts and regionals and go to states.

What do you do to prepare for a tournament?

I practice every day for a couple hours a day and usually listen to music right before.

What is your favorite aspect of golf?

The fact that I’m not actually competing against other people so I can root for my friends and hang out with them. It doesn’t get too competitive.

What is your favorite golf memory or experience?

My first hole-in-one. It’s the only one I ever got, and I got it last year in August during a tournament.

Do you plan to play golf in college?

Yes, I’m committed to play at George Washington University.

What inspired you to play golf and how long have you been playing?

My dad started golf a few years before I was born and as he was learning he took me on the course with him and helped me learn, too. I’ve been playing since I was 8.

What are some of your strengths?

I’m good mentally. I don’t get angry like some people do, and I don’t get too emotional on the course, which is good. I’m also pretty consistent.

What are some of your weaknesses?

My irons aren’t that good. I don’t hit the ball too close to the hole that much.

What do you consider the hardest thing about golf?

Patience, and the mental part of the game. You can’t get too angry when you do badly, and you can’t get too excited when you do well.
